Building a toy box for your child or grandchild can be a fun weekend project. The materials
requests are not terribly expensive and finishes are limited only by your imagination. It can
cut two meters wide and two meters deep and four feet wide outside the toy box with two sheets of plywood
some left over for your next project. Choose a front, three-quarter inch thick plywood finished
such as a face of birch or oak, makes for a beautiful heirloom duration, time that will last many,
many years. Of course you can build a nice box of toys with paint grade plywood as well.
Using the individual panels, the installation of cookies and edges of bonding is a bit 'more than many
homeowners are equipped to do so we will work with sheets of plywood for this toy box. When
the purchase of plywood, get four caster wheels heavy, some one and a quarter inch of wood
screws, some good carpenters glue, a four-foot piano hinge and a handle, if you want to add one.
You will also need about thirty feet by three-quarters of an inch wide trim to cover the exposed edges
single sheets. Paints and stains can be purchased once you decide your desired
end.
If you have a large table saw, cut the plywood panels is a breeze. If no, using a good
rule set for the plywood to guide you while you cut it, it works well. Use a good
created to offset sharp blade in your circular saw. The trick is to get a good clean sharp
edges of all denominations. The first sheet of plywood will be marked in two increments of the foot so as to
have four two-foot by four foot pieces when you're done. These are the top, bottom, front and rear
panels. The second sheet will have only one two foot by four foot piece cut from the sheet and
then cut that piece is cut in half to finish with two, two feet by two pieces of the foot. These are
the ends of the toy box. Now, to keep this simple, cut an additional one and a half inches from
the length of the two ends and the bottom panel. It is not the height, only the length and here is
why. When mounting the toy box you build the portion of the rectangle with sides and
front and rear panels before. When they are all gathered the rectangle will measure exactly two
feet wide by four feet long. The cut ends of the thumb and the middle allows the Lap '
front and rear panels beyond the end panels and the result is a measurement of two feet. Now, after
checking the measurement within an inch and a half cut off the extra width of the bottom
panel and then dropping the bottom panel inside the rectangle. It provides the minimum denomination exposed
edges of the plywood. Assemble all these panels using wood glue and screws and apply your
clamps making sure that all panels are plumb and square to each other and set aside to dry. Once
dry to lightly sand all the edges to ensure no splinters of plywood are nasty. The
top piece measuring two meters by four meters will be properly positioned on top of the toy box. You want to
install the piano hinge in such a way that will allow the top to flip back from the box
when open but close flush with the front when it is closed. Once done, install a short piece of
small chain inside to prevent the lid from flipping back and rips the zipper from
box. Install the handle, if you have purchased one or cut a hole along four inches long and two inches wide
longitudinally in the front portion of the lid and then round on all inner edges and out.
This will allow small hands to fit inside and lift the cover. Install the three-quarter inch wide
edge trim to the ends of the box and the edges of the lid.
Now install the four heavy wheels. A box full of toys can weigh a lot, and when the box
becomes a place for two children having lunch, you do not want the casters to collapse. With all the '
work done to finish the toy box becomes a great project with the kids or grand kids. Once
the base color is applied, try to have them use their hands in different colored paints to leave
their little hand prints behind. Given the prints for them, and then apply a good sealer finish.
Your toy box is a treasure that you will remember to take with you for a long, long time.
